What is beauty to you?

Often, the media seems to try to define what beauty is.
One day it proclaims, 'curves are in,’ and the next it declares a woman who is of a healthy weight 'frumpy.' Sometimes, it attacks thinner women and tells them to gain weight.
A lot of a time 'beauty' seems to change on a minute to minute basis. So much emphasis is put on being 'pretty' today that sadly, some go to huge extremes to change themselves but what is pretty? I'm not sure if I'm the only one who finds the idea of 'perfection' a little scary.
Honestly, I don't think prettiness is something which you can follow a guide to, as my mother sometimes says, 'beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.'

Some people have tried to set standards for beauty but in my opinion; this is impossible. Beauty isn't really something you can define and beauty isn't always appearance. To me, to be beautiful you have to have a beautiful personality and this is what really matters the most.
What is beauty to you? Is it important?

  1. Hi Louise,

To me beauty is people like you who remind me what it is like to be young and learning and caring about the world and trying to make a difference.

The only beauty is in a person's soul. The people who matter in our lives will be able to see our beauty if we let them. Beauty is in a kind smile, it is in eyes that sparkle with love and life and a genuine concern for others.

What would the world be like if all we worried about was how good we looked all the time?

You are right. The media, along with fashion and cosmetic mega-interests, have dictated our idea of beauty for so long and we have been programmed to just go with it. They make money out of us all trying to appease our egos. Real beauty and real strength comes from going against what is so plainly wrong and so plainly bad for us.

Perfection doesn't exist. True beauty is not physical. You can't make yourelf beautiful.

    Thanks for a lovely post.

  2. I agree there is way too much pressure of women/ girls to be beautiful in today's society.
I absolutely agree with your mum beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it also has a lot to do with the persons personality and the way they treat others.
It also worries me how girls try to make themselves look beautiful to the extent that they don't eat and become severely anorexic or become depressed so much that they can't get that perfect look and some people can kill themselves by doing this.

  3. Well said Louise~ I definitely agree with you; there's too much emphasis being put to be "pretty". Not many females out there know about their "true" beauty. I hope this article changes their perception :)
